Flow vs. Procrastination
It’s easy to notice when we feel creative and in flow. We get work done, we take care of ourselves and we feel happy, lighter and more inclined to step out of our comfort zone and try new things or meet new people.
But when we’re stuck in an energy of procrastination, there can be a subtle negative spiral of emotions and actions.
We really *want* to get things done – especially projects close to our hearts like writing our book, decorating our home or planning holidays – but the days just seem to slip away. Before we know it, we’ve binge-watched an entire new series on Netflix, eaten a whole packet of cookies or not been to the gym for a month!
One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that procrastination kicks in when I feel overwhelmed.
It’s a complex web of connections between my brain and my body, but essentially my energy dips when I’m stressed financially. When I’m stressed my health issues flare up which means my energy levels dip – physically and mentally. When my energy is low I don’t do as much exercise and catch myself numbing out with old Sex and the City episodes, snacking instead of making proper meals and avoiding socialising.
But the key here is that while this may be my pattern, I now have the AWARENESS to notice when it’s happening.
💥Your triggers and patterns will be different to mine, but being able to spot them is the key to changing your habits and setting yourself on a new course.💥
I believe that it’s important to allow yourself to FEEL these emotions and experiences though.
It’s not about avoiding all those negative dips and moments of procrastination. They’re important steps in our journey of life.
💫To get back on track, my top tip is to set yourself a new routine. This will look different for each of us but will likely include a regular morning wake up time, journalling, a walk in nature or exercise of some kind, healthy eating, uninterrupted chunks of work time and scheduled treats – such as a massage, a weekend away or simply a cup of tea with a friend.💫
